Curriculum Information

St Anthony’s Primary School is committed to the consistent use of Explicit Instruction in every classroom. This approach involves teachers directly teaching the content or skills to be learned, using clear and precise language. Lessons typically begin with teacher modelling, followed by guided practice, and then structured opportunities for students to practise independently. Throughout this process, student–teacher interaction is high, and active engagement is essential.

Research shows that teaching has a powerful impact on student learning. A strong body of evidence highlights the benefits of systematic, explicit teaching – especially when introducing new concepts or supporting students who find learning more challenging.

Assessment plays a central role in this process. At St Anthony’s, assessment is not simply a way of measuring progress; it is a vital tool for guiding learning. Regular progress monitoring helps teachers identify what students already know, what they are ready to learn next, and where misunderstandings may exist. This enables teachers to adjust their instruction, provide targeted support and extend students appropriately.

Our teaching is guided by the Victorian Curriculum (www.victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au), which sets out what all Australian students should learn from Prep to Year 10. These curriculum standards help schools design learning programs, monitor student progress, and report to parents.
